Here are the variables (options)…
Instrument Type:
Each model number has a 3-letter prefix to indicate the type of instrument. The first letter is always “C” for CarolBrass, followed by a 2-letter abbreviation for the kind of kind of instrument:
CFL - FLUGELHORN
CPT - POCKET TRUMPET
CTH - HERALD TRUMPET
CTR – TRUMPET
4-digit Model Number:
After the instrument letter code a hyphen follows, then a 4-digit number that indicates these four things on STANDARD MODELS (Custom Series differ)…
Digit 1, Model Series
1 = 1000, Student, beginner model 5 = 5000, Pro models
2 = 2000, Student, upgrade model 6 = 6000, Pro w/twin-thick leadpipe
3 = 3000, Student, Intermediate 7 = 7000, Legend Series
4 = 4000, Pro base model (Sm. Leadpipe) 8 = 8000, Balanced Models
Digit 2, Outer Tuning Slide Material
0 = Yellow Brass
2 = Nickel Silver
5 = Thick-wall Nickel Silver
Digit 3, Leadpipe Material
0 = Yellow Brass (70% Copper) 6 = Sterling Silver
5 = Gold Brass (85% Copper) 8 = Twin-wall 1-Piece Nickel**
(inside center tapered section is gold brass)
**Except CTR-6080H-YST-L which is a special build with all yellow brass
Digit 4, Bore Size
0 = .460” (ML) 2 = .465” (L) 4 = .470” (XL)
Leadpipe Style: Following immediately after the 4-digit number (no hyphen) there is a single letter on some
models, like the “H” in the example trumpet number shown:
H on trumpets with a conventional leadpipe
L on trumpets with a reversed leadpipe
Flugelhorns & Pockets do NOT have a leadpipe designation letter.
Bell Model: Following the 4-digit number (with or without a letter attached) is another hyphen followed by
a 3-letter code to indicate the size, weight and material of the bell section. The 3 letters
tell you this:
1. Bell Material:
Y = Yellow Brass (70% Copper)
G = Gold Brass (85% Copper)
R = Red Brass (90% Copper)
2. Bell Size:
S = Standard (compare to Bach 37 on trumpet models)
5.0” Bell Flare on 4000 - 9000 series trumpets
4.843” Bell Flare on 1000 – 3000 series trumpets
3.661” Bell Flare on small bell pocket trumpet (spec. order)
L = Large (72)
5.079” on 5000-9000 series trumpets
4.724” Bell Flare on large bell pocket trumpet (normal size)
3. Bell Weight (or thickness)
S = Standard (.024” thickness)
M = Medium (.020” thickness) (red brass bells)
T = Thin (.016”) Lightweight
Key: The bell code is followed by another hyphen, after which is shown the Key (or Keys) in which the
trumpet plays or to get technical it’s the concert pitch played as the first overtone in the
open position with no valves depressed. On trumpets this will be either Bb or C.
Finish: After another hyphen there will be a letter code for the finish:
L - Lacquer Finish
S - Silver Plated
SG - Silver Plated w/ 24K Gold Trim: Caps, Buttons, Water Key Levers or Screw Caps
SGG - Silver Plated with 24K Gold Trim as above PLUS 24K gold Tuning Slides
(commonly applied to cornets)
SL - Satin Lacquer finish (complete hand scratched finish prior to lacquer)
SLB - Satin Lacquer Bell (Only the bell section has the scratched finish. The rest
of the trumpet is polished.) The entire instrument is lacquered.
BG - BLACKHAWK MODEL - Black Nickel with 24K gold Trim
The base metal is black nickel plated prior to epoxy lacquer.
Caps, Buttons and Water Key Levers or Screw Caps are plated with 24K Gold.
AL - Antique Lacquer – The metal is chemically “antiqued” before lacquer is applied
P - Raw Brass – The instrument is built in raw brass (no lacquer or plating). The bell label
stamping will have no suffix letter, but in cataloging, packaging and invoicing the model
number will have the "P" suffix (Plain).
